[LB020114], Letter from Samuel Insull to Drexel Morgan & Co, Charles Henry Coster, February 16th, 1885
Editor's Notes
"I have your favor of 14th inst. I have been [look]ing int[o] the question of Rail Road patents I find that France is the only country on the European continent where Electric Rail Road patents were taken out ??????. As to exactly whose property the [F]renc[h] ?? R.R. patent may be I am unable to decide. It depends intimately on the Construction of the Contracts between Mr Edison & the Edison Electric Light Co of Europe. In all? Other European countries Mr Edison has no patents on Elc?. Rail Road. I return you Major Eatons letter on this subject. I will consult Mr Edison on the subject ?????? Also see Mr Batchelor & ???? ???? From him the views of the French Company on this ?????? I may mention that I find that we have a French patent on [E]lectric? Rail Road which I find has not been transferred to the Compagnie Continetale Edison of Paris ? [& I?] [d]o not think that they have even asked us for such a transfer which would seem to lead to the construction that only (Ea? ?? Con? Edison) ?o all consi[de]r themselves entitled to the patent. The [E]nglish patents and Electric? Rail Road are assured by? Your favor, & Mr Edison possibly as you are aware. Patents have also been taken out in India Victoria? [New?] [Ze]aland & new South W[ales?]. The Light patents in these [Countries] belong to Edisons Indian & [Colonial] Electric Co but I think y[o]u will find by referring to the agreement with that [Company?] that the Rail Road is excluded in the same manner as in the Contract with the [English] [Ed]ison Co. I will call on you tomorrow on Wednesday with the various agreements between Drexel Morgan & Co & Mr Edison & which you asked for some days back."
