Title

[LB027441], Letter from Alfred Ord Tate to Samuel Insull, December 17th, 1888

Editor's Notes

"Here is a copy of the form of power of attorney which Mr. Fox has prepared for Mr. Connery. When Mr. Connery was last here I got the impression that he was to make application for concession from the Government of Mexico, covering the exclusive right to sell phonographs in that country for a term of years, and that he was to file certified copies of our U.S. patents as exhibits. I do not know whether you received the same impression. The fact is, that Mr. Connery is going to try and obtain from the Government of Mexico the exclusive privileges of putting phonographs in all or any of the Post Offices or Gov't offices of the Republic of Mexico. He is not going to obtain any exclusive privileges with relation to Mexican territory, and we therefore have to protect ourselves in the ordinary way by patents I have in my hands at the present time certified copies of all patents which have been issued up to date in the U.S. in connection with the phonograph, 21 in number I believe. The Mexican Government requires certified copies of patents issued in other countries before it will grant patents, and therefore all that is necessary for us to do, is to send these copies to our patent attorney, Mr. Luis Mendez, and have him cover everything that they contain. ### I have not spoken to Mr. Edison about this matter but will do so as soon as I have an opportunity, and meanwhile I wish you to be posted as to the progress of events." Very truly yours, A.O. Tate [Marginalia: "Since visiting the above I have seen Mr. Edison. He had the same impression as myself. ### He says 'Ok' in regard to patents. I will prepare the correspondence for Mendez and you will see it before it goes forward." A.O. Tate]
