Dear Sirs:-
I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 14th instant, in which you decline to pay the freight and duties on the car of matte, which was sent to me from Canada, and in which you state that your Mr. McIntosh and Mr. A;;en arranged with me, that I was to pay the freight and duties myself.
I am not aware of any such arrangement. All I ever asked for, to experiment with, was a barrel of matte, but Mr. Ritchie always insisted upon my taking more than I required.
He tendered the car of matte, and placed it at my disposal, and I accepted it, but not with the understanding that I was to pay for it, or that I was to pay the charges incurred in bringing it here. The only use that I could ever have made of a [illegible] of matte, was in a large demonstration, and as I do not intend to make this demonstration, I have no use for the material. I will have it put into barrels, weighed, and will place the same at your disposal. I also shall be glad to receive from you, a check for the bills which are already in your hands, for freight and duties.
Yours very truly,
Thomas A. Edison
