May 10, 1890 Francis B. Crocker, Esq., Instructor in Elec. Engineering, School of Mines, Columbia College, New York My dear Sir:- I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter under date 7th instant, in regard to my founding a Scholarship for Columbia College. I beg to say that it will be entirely impracticable for me to found this Scholarship. All my money is turned over in the Laboratory here and applied to experimental work, and the results of my labor are eventually made known for the benefit of those who are interested in that class of work. This may not be what is generally known as a direct contribution, but in effect it is exactly the same. It costs me a hundred and fifty thousand dollars a year to carry on the experimental work of this Laboratory and I feel that I cannot afford to add to the expense. Yours very truly, Thomas A. Edison
