Sept. 1, 1891.
P. Cardaw, Esq.,
Brunswick, Working,
England.
Dear Sir:-
Upon my return to the Laboratory a few days ago after a prolonged absence I find your letter under date 21st of June. I note what you say in regard to your volunteer being manufactured by Messrs. Queen & Co. without any acknowledgement, and that they claim a similar instrument was exhibited by myself at the Paris Exposition of 1881.
I suppose that Queen & Co. refer to a long tube with bulb on end exhausted and in which was a long thin platinum iridum wire, which served to rotate a pivoted lever upon which there was a mirror. This was shown at Paris, in the Exposition named, but it was not arranged for electric lighting work, and doubtless there are essential points of difference in your interrupted and in your patent which would enable you to prevent Messr. Queen & Co. from manufacturing your apparatus.
Yours truly,
[Thos. A. Edison]
