- "Payne No. 1. In 6" evaporating dish put 20 reg 6 C.P. carbons; filled dish 1/2 full H2SO4 (commercial) & applied heat directly to dish. As acid became heated, color of carbons changed slightly from shiny to dull black. Boiled acid down to 1/2 vol. then allowed to cool to temp. of air. Washed carbons in H2) & dried by evaporation. Carbons did not twist or change shape.
