Title
[NB002006], Technical Note, Arthur Coyle Payne, May 18th, 1887
Editor's Notes
"Payne 3. In 1 1/2' gas tube put 2 reg forms each containing 3 reg 16 C.P. bamboo filaments. Filled tube with powdered asphalt. Put in furnace chamber & in 6 hours, raised it gradually to temp of 600[degrees] Fahr. During the process the gas & liquid asphalt are slowly forced out of tube, & it can be easily be made air tight, therefore, pressure inside is not very great. Took out of oven & cautiously unscrewed cap to allow escape of gas & then plunged tube in boiling Linseed Oil & kept there until asphalt became limpid then removed forms & placed in Turpentine to dissolve remaining asphalt & found all carbons broken. They appeared to be well preliminarized but very rotten. In appearance were dead black."
