- "H.H. #4. Received from Lawson in forms 15 carbons marked Ord. H. # 4 (see Hamilton's memoranda). Sent them to Hanson. Carbons looked fine, having smooth light silvery appearance. H. H. V. #4. Took out of tube, put up by Hamilton, preliminarized carbon that had been treated in mixture equal parts by weight of asphalt & Linseed Oil & subjected to gradual rise of temp. from 75[degrees] to 600[degrees] in 8 hourss (Fahr). Found 7 out of 20 broken in forms. Carbons were washed in Benzol, dried, put in forms marked H. H. V. #4 & sent to Lawson for final carbonization then well preliminarized, smooth & black."
