Title

[NB004006], Technical Note, Arthur Coyle Payne, June 3rd, 1887

Editor's Notes

p. 6 "20 reg. 16 C.P. filaments in reg. forms, sealed in glass tube containing Carbolic Acid. Put in Sand bath in furnace chamber & in 1 hr. raised in temp. from 75 [degrees] to 600 [degrees] Fahr. Heat turned off & tube allowed to cool down slowly. On taking out fibres found that they had been acted on in much the same way, as those treated in Wood tar, the cementing substance being dissolved from between elementary fibres, which when rubbed or crushed, became a woolly mass. Now quite so well done as in Wood tar. Not sent to Lawson."; p. 7 20 reg. 16 C.P. filaments in sealed glass tube containing powdered Rosin. Put in Sand bath in furnace chamber & in 1 hr. raised in temp. from 75 [degrees] to 600 [degrees] Fahr. Taken out & before rosin cooled enough to solidify tip broken off-- then tube borken & forms put in boiling Linseed Oil. When taken out, found to have been acted on in same way as that in Wood-tar & Carb. Acid, but elementary fibres seem to be more rotten & not to so soft & woolly when rubbed. Not sent to Lawson nor 8 hr. tube run."
