The Thomas A. Edison Papers Digital Edition

This ledger is primarily a continuation of the accounts in Cat. 1216. The entries cover the period April 1876-November 1878. Many are initialed by William Carman and some bear notations indicating that they were transferred to a "new book" (Cat. 1187).

The first part of the book also contains Edison's personal accounts for the period January 1869-July 1874. These early entries do not run in chronological order, and their neatness and uniformity suggest that they were probably copied into the ledger by him well after they were originally recorded. Pages 84-85 contain a list of Edison's assets and liabilities on April 20, 1875. A statement of the assets and liabilities of the firm of Edison & Unger for January 1872 appears on page 378.

The spine is labeled "GENERAL LEDGER. July 1871 to Nov. 1878." A 24 page index precedes 381 numbered pages.

Page 84 was published as Doc. 565 in The Papers of Thomas A. Edison, Vol. 2.
