[D7840-F] (D-78-40) Telephone

This folder contains correspondence and other documents relating to the marketing of Edison's telephone outside the United States. The correspondents include Edison associates James Adams, Charles Batchelor, George E. Gouraud, and George G. Ward. There is also correspondence with Joshua F. Bailey, a patent attorney with interests in both the telephone and electric lighting, and with Bailey's business partner, Theodore Puskas. Other correspondents include Franklin H. Badger of Montreal, who secured the rights to market Edison's telephone in Canada; L. A. Ludwig, who proposed to demonstrate Edison's phonograph and telephone in Central America; and Budapest-born actor and theatrical impresario Imre Kiralfy, who wished to exhibit Edison's phonograph and his "musical telephone" in Continental Europe. Also included are documents pertaining to the organization of the Societe du Telephone Edison, which marketed Edison's telephone in France; an agreement between Edison and the American Speaking Telephone Co., which had been organized in November 1877 to combine Edison's telephone interests (controlled by Gold & Stock Telegraph Co.) with those of Elisha Gray; and circulars issued by the Edison Speaking-Telephone Co. of London and the British Railways Speaking-Telephone Co., Ltd.

All of the documents have been selected except for duplicate copies of correspondence and agreements.
