Description: This folder contains correspondence and other documents relating to the business of the Edison United Phonograph Co. Included are letters pertaining to the formation of phonograph syndicates in France and Italy; the organization of the Deutsche Edison Phonographen Gesellschaft; and the operations of the British phonograph syndicate, the Edison-Bell Phonograph Corporation, Ltd. Some of the items deal with efforts to reorganize the E.U.P.C.; other letters discuss technical problems with the phonograph. At the end of the folder is a two-page statement of the company's assets.
Many of the letters in this folder were authored by, or sent to, Stephen F. Moriarty, the company's general manager; among these is a lengthy letter to Senator Thomas C. Platt regarding the history of the E.U.P.C. and its relationship with Edison. Other correspondents include G. N. Morison, secretary of the E.U.P.C.; William A. Smith of the Edison-Bell Phonograph Corporation; and Ludwig Stollwerck of the Deutsche Edison Phonographen Gesellschaft.
Approximately 70 percent of the documents have been selected. The following categories of documents have not been selected: nonsubstantive correspondence concerning meeting arrangements and other routine company business; untranslated foreign-language documents in French and German; personal correspondence and other letters by Moriarty unrelated to the phonograph business; duplicate copies of selected items.
