Among the topics discussed in the new letters are Jennie's trips to Europe in 1877-1879 with Lillian Massey, Pamela Helen Goodwin, and Florence Gilchrist; her tour of Britain and Continental Europe with the Vincent family in 1886-1887; Mina Edison's state of mind following her marriage to Thomas Edison; the marriage of Ira Mandeville Miller to Cora Wise; and Richard P. Marvin's romantic interest in Jennie. ]
This folder consists primarily of letters from Jane Eliza (Jennie) Miller (1855-1898) to her younger sister, Mina Miller Edison. The 64 selected items cover the years 1877-1896. Some of the letters written prior to Mina's marriage contain references to her former suitor, George E. Vincent, who was the son of Chautauqua co-founder John Heyl Vincent. Also included are two letters written while Jennie was touring Europe with her sisters Mary and Grace in 1889. The letters contain comments about the behavior Mina's stepdaughter Marion Edison, who was also visiting Europe. Three of the letters are by Richard Pratt Marvin (1848-1906)—brother-in-law of manufacturer B. F. Goodrich—who married Jane in 1892. One of Marvin's letters, written in October 1896 and addressed to Thomas Edison, is a recommendation on behalf of British rubber goods and cable manufacturer Christian H. Gray. Marvin also refers to the illness of his wife, "who does not gain strength as fast as we might wish, but is doing far better than we had reason to expect."
