Description: This letterbook covers the period July 1883-March 1885 and contains handwritten copies of incoming and outgoing cable messages. All of the transcribed cables are in the hand of Samuel Insull or John F. Randolph, acting as Edison's secretary. Most of the cables concern foreign orders for dynamos, electric lamps, and steam engines. There are also cables relating to the consolidation of three French electric lighting companies: Compagnie Continentale Edison, Société Electrique Edison, and Société Industrielle et Commerciale Edison. Other cables pertain to the ownership of Edison's foreign lamp patents and the development of the electric light business in Chile and Korea. Among the recipients are Edison, Charles Batchelor, the Deutsche Edison Gesellschaft, the Société Electrique Edison, and Willis N. Stewart. Pasted onto the inside back cover is a list of cable codes, along with correspondence between Edison and the Société d'Appareillage Electrique concerning the meaning of the codes. The book contains 361 numbered pages. Pages 1-3, 28-29, and 67-361 are blank. All of the documents have been selected.
