Description: This letterbook covers the period September 1881-March 1883. Most of the letters are by Batchelor and are in his hand. The correspondence relates primarily to electric lighting in Europe. There are also letters pertaining to electric traction, the phonograph, the telegraph, and the telephone. Among the recipients are Edison, Joshua F. Bailey, Sherburne B. Eaton, Samuel Insull, Edward H. Johnson, Charles Porges, Francis R. Upton, and the Compagnie Continentale Edison. Translations of code words used in cable messages can be found on pages 74, 81, and 86. The front cover is labeled "Batchelor. Private." The book contains 500 numbered pages and an index. Approximately 70 percent of the book has been selected.
