-
This folder contains notes by Edison relating to his inspection of U.S. Navy battleships and destroyers during target practice drills. The notes, which are arranged according to the order in which Edison visited the ships, extend into the spring of 1917. His observations deal with equipment problems and new technologies that could be developed to correct them. Included are comments on range finders, searchlights, ammunition handling, communications systems, and "fire control" (gunnery). At the end of the folder is a table of test firing data collected by Edison.
The following ships and naval officers are mentioned: USS Virginia (Capt. Jackson; Lt. J. W. Wilcox, Jr.), USS New Jersey (Lt. L. N. McNair), USS Florida (Lt. H. F. Leary; Ens. William H. P. Blandy; H. V. Bryan); USS South Carolina (Lt. Comdr. Arthur J. Hepburn; Lt. Theodore G. Ellyson); USS Wyoming (Capt. Thomas Snowden; Lt. R. S. Holmes); USS New York (Lt. Comdr. Gilbert J. Rowcliff); USS Balch (Lt. J. McD. Cresap); and USS Texas .
All of the documents have been selected.
