This is the first of two notebooks used by Upton in November and December 1878 to conduct a literature search for the Edison Electric Light Co. Upton searched through patents and journal articles for information about arc and incandescent lamps. Many of the entries in the first part of the book pertain to patents for lamp regulators. On page 53 is a note by Upton about the uniqueness of Edison's lamp design. Near the end of the book are a few notes from patents and journal articles concerning the platinum group of metals. The first page bears the inscription "Mch 1905 This was my first work for Mr. Edison. FRU." The back cover is labeled "S" and "Heating substances." The book was used in both directions. The pages in the front of the book are numbered 1-75. The pages in the back of the book are numbered 1-15; there are also 5 unnumbered pages of notes.
