This notebook was used by Edison during the period December 1915-January 1916 for notes on experiments to improve the composition of disc record blanks and the varnish surfaces applied during the transfer process. The entries at the beginning of the book pertain to experimental record blanks numbered from 1279 to 1289. Subsequent entries describe a sequence of experiments numbered from 1E to 57E. Included are notes on results obtained from varying the ingredients or their proportions, as well as varying the dipping time for varnish and varying the pressure and heat applied in forming and coating blanks. The summary of results usually provides a tally of acceptable and unacceptable record surfaces obtained. Also included are lists of solvents to add to varnish and other materials. Some of Edison's notes are in the form of instructions to Archie D. Hoffman, Sherwood T. (Sam) Moore, or other employees. Inserted into the book is a form entitled "Experimental. Powder Blank Transfer Inspection," along with another form entitled "Final Record Test." Both forms have been filled in by an unidentified experimenter and date from January 1916. The front cover is labeled "1916 #1 Disc Expmts 57E." The pages are unnumbered. Approximately 170 pages have been used.
