This notebook, which dates from February 1872, contains over one hundred drawings by Edison of escapement mechanisms for printing telegraphs. The book was acquired in the late 1880s from Western Union by telegraph engineer Georges D'Infreville and was sold to Toronto collector R. S. Williams for one hundred dollars in 1910 (see Thomas A. Edison Papers: A Selective Microfilm Edition, Part IV (1899-1910), 195:606). It contains 209 numbered pages, many of which are blank. Related experimental drawings can be found in Newark Shop Notebooks, Cat. 1174 and Cat. 1182.
