These documents cover the years 1879-1881 and 1921-1936. They include correspondence to and from Francis Jehl at various stages of his career, from his arrival at Menlo Park in 1879 to his supervision of Edison commemorative activities during the 1920s. The correspondents include Edison, Henry Ford, George M. Phelps, Jr., and John Wesley Whitfield. Additional documents prepared by Jehl on the basis of his and others' recollections include undated reminiscences, accompanied by drawings, of two buildings at Menlo Park, and a map of the town showing places associated with Edison and his associates.
At the end of the folder is a 56-page typescript of Jehl's Menlo Park diary for January-March and May 1881, with handwritten annotations that were probably made during the 1930s. There are entries relating to experimental lamp testing, demonstrations for visitors, Edison's travel to and from New York, the development and repair of electrical meters and motors, and Jehl's interactions with Charles Batchelor, Samuel Insull, and the other members of Edison's staff.
