These documents, which date from 1886-1887, relate primarily to Alfred O. Tate's role in the development and marketing of Edison's system of phonoplex telegraphy. A letter from Tate to Edison describes progress in implementing this intermediate-distance induction-based system in Pennsylvania and Maryland. A circular letter from the Edison Phonoplex System, managed by Tate and Samuel Insull, encloses testimonials from satisfied railroad customers. There is also a letter written by Tate, in his capacity as Edison's private secretary, to the Fort Gratiot Methodist Episcopal Church.
