Description: These documents cover the period December 1877-October 1878. They relate primarily to the formation of the Edison Speaking Phonograph Co. Some of the letters concern proposals to market the phonograph through exhibitions and demonstrations. Most of the letters are to or from Gardiner G. Hubbard, president of the Bell Telephone Co. and the Edison Speaking Phonograph Co. Other correspondents include George L. Bradley, Charles A. Cheever, Hilborne L. Roosevelt, Thomas Sanders, and Thomas A. Watson, who were telephone executives involved in the organization of the Edison Speaking Phonograph Co. There are also letters from Edward H. Johnson and Uriah H. Painter, Edison associates and officials of the phonograph company, and James Redpath, a former journalist who was hired in May 1878 to manage the phonograph exhibition business and to train exhibitors.
