These letters, most of which are undated, are primarily from Madeleine Edison to her younger brother, Charles; there are also several letters from Charles to Madeleine. The earliest letter dates from 1906 or 1907; the latest is from 1918. Many of the letters were written while Madeleine was enrolled at Bryn Mawr College near Philadelphia (1906-1908) and while Charles was a student at The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut (1907-1909). In addition to discussion of school and family matters, there are also references to Madeleine's personal finances and her distrust of Financial Executive Stephen B. Mambert, whom she characterizes as the "chief cook and bottle washer of the Allied Edison interests."
The letters, all of which have been selected, are from Books #2 and #3 on the Charles Edison Fund microfilm and from another book, not on the microfilm, bearing the title "Dear Charles Edison's Letters: Grandparents, Sisters/Brothers, Aunts/Uncles, Cousins, Friends' Letters." Additional letters from Charles to Madeleine can be found in the David E. E. Sloane Collection.
