Description

This collection consists of the records of the credit reporting agency R. G. Dun & Co. Established in 1841 as the Mercantile Agency, this company along with other firms such as J. M. Bradstreet & Sons offered information to merchants and investors who wanted to know about the financial stability and trustworthiness of the firms with whom they were dealing. The reports were submitted to the company by its field agents and subsequently copied into large ledgers organized by state and county. The selected reports, which cover the years 1872-1883, are from ledger D36. They discuss the financial status and creditworthiness of Edison and several of his companies, including Edison & Unger, J. T. Murray & Co., Edison & Murray, and the Edison Lamp Co. Transcriptions of most of these reports can be found in volumes 1-6 of the book edition of The Papers of Thomas A. Edison.
