This collection consists primarily of letters exchanged between Edison and Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels, along with related correspondence. Many of the typewritten letters are accompanied by drafts in Edison's hand. The first item in this folder is an undated 3-page memorandum in the hand of Edison's personal assistant William H. Meadowcroft. It pertains to Edison's work on a shrapnel shell that would burst above the ground without the need for a time fuse. The last sentence of the memorandum indicates that it was written some time after the end of the war. The other item is a drawing of the shell by Henry G. Wolfe bearing the date of November 21, 1917. This project is described on pp. 190-191 of Lloyd N. Scott's Naval Consulting Board of the United States.
