These letters are primarily by John's mother, Alice Eyre Sloane, and were written during her tour of Europe (June-September 1910). Six letters in which Alice comments on Madeleine Edison and John's proposal of marriage have been selected. The letters reveal her misgivings about her son marrying a non-Catholic and her hope that Madeleine might come to "see the truth and beauty of your religion." Also selected are letters by Julia Thompson, Madeleine's friend and roommate at Bryn Mawr, and Anna Foster, a Llewellyn Park resident who was friends with both the Edison and Sloane families. The letters comment on Madeleine's news that she and John are secretly engaged. Anna's letter also discusses her role in introducing John to Madeleine during the summer of 1909.
