These letters, which cover the periods September 1917, January-November 1918, and February 1919, consist primarily of correspondence from Alice Eyre Sloane to her son, John Eyre Sloane. There is also one letter authored jointly by Alice and her husband, Thomas O'Connor Sloane, as well as two letters from Alice to her daughter-in-law, Madeleine Edison Sloane. Religious pamphlets are enclosed in many of the letters. Only one item has been selected: a letter from June 18, 1918, recording Alice's impressions of her visit to the Edison family home in Glenmont and the celebration of John and Madeleine's fourth wedding anniversary. At that time, John was stationed with the Signal Corps in Washington, D.C., and Madeleine was living at her parents' house with her sons, two-year-old Thomas Edison (Teddy) Sloane and two-month-old John Edison (Jack) Sloane.
