This scrapbook contains newspaper clippings from 1915-1916 relating to the use of Edison's nickel-alkaline battery on submarines. Included is a 1915 interview with Edison's chief engineer, Miller Reese Hutchison, and numerous items pertaining to the explosion aboard the E-2 on January 15, 1916, which permanently tarnished the reputation of the Edison submarine battery. Also included is an article entitled "Edison's Present to Uncle Sam," by Philip Francis Nowlan, who would later achieve renown as the creator of Buck Rogers. The cover of the scrapbook bears the handwritten inscription "Newspaper Clippings Edison Storage Batteries Submarines 1915-16." Printed at the bottom is the name of the Electric Storage Battery Co., the main rival of Edison's company, which manufactured a lead-acid battery for submarines and apparently assembled the clippings in the scrapbook.
