[D8241Q], Letter from George Harrison Bliss to Thomas Alva Edison, August 29th, 1882

Editor's Notes

Pls tell me max HP you will sell to any one party in NY first district. Glad to hear you will give us storage battery--send details. TAE marg: "I can give you storage battery better than Faure but if you desire to be a success don't touch a storage battery. It's a beatiful product of science but a most dismal failure commercially." Talked with Moses at Goerck St., who was optimistic that arc light would be ready for customers within a month, that it would run in same circuit as incandescent using same current as 15 of the 8cp lamps. Are you equally sangauine? TAE marg: "Either he lied outrageously or you misunderstood him he has nothing but an arc light which will burn on B circuit, or 2 in service on a A circuit. It requires 1hp each. it will soon be ready so will our 100cp incandescent the latter is preferable & more durable." J. V. Farwell & Co putting up huge dry goods warehouse; they're stockholders in Western Co but plan to use Fuller arc for large area. TAE marg: "we can give them arc or 100cp incandescent." If we can offer arc or big incandescent I can probably shut out rivals. TAE marg: "you shall have them but it takes time to do all things." Took order for 310 A lamps, with forfeiture clause in case plant not ready by date promised. TAE marg: "it won't be on account of dynamo or lamps." Only foreseeable obstacle is getting engine, but Armington & Sims promised to ship by 15 Sept. TAE marg: "Look out for Armington & Sims. They don’t come to time. You better [commence?] on going further now & keep it up." Engines are the roadblock; holding up Academy of Music installation. TAE marg: "I am trying to arrange it so we can have large stock [of engines] in hand." Congrats on promising condition of first district.
