Title

[D8505U], Letter from Arthur Barbarin to Thomas Alva Edison, November 2nd, 1885

Editor's Notes

Would like to substitute electric lighting for gas and oil where suitable; I believe that to gain popular acceptance for electric lighting each consumer should be independent and produce his own electricity; I think this can be done by means of a battery, cheap and of long duration, not dangerous and requiring little attention; I have a newly discovered an exciting liquid for batteries; I'd like to test it using your lamps, but can't pay for them due to recent business losses; in return you would receive preference within a reasonable matter of time to take up the discovery or reject it; should experiment succeed would then pay you for lamps & battery and make any other reasonable concession; am an old telegrapher; first words ever exchanged between NY and New Orleans were between Mr. Cure and me [provides references]
