Title

[D8603ZCD], Letter from Mary E Engle to Thomas Alva Edison, October 4th, 1886

Editor's Notes

You will be somewhat surprised to receive a letter from one of your childhood friends, but perhaps you have not forgotten Willis and Mary Engle and your old music teacher Miss Edson[?]. ##It is on her behalf that I write you now. When she left Port Huron in 1860, your father owed her a music bill of 17 dollars for lessons given you. If you had not prospered beyond measure almost, she would have said nothing of this. But she is obliged to teach music yet for her support though over 70 years of age. If you can, pay this--it will be quite a help to her now. Her health is quite poor and I am living with her and taking care of her when sick. ##Willis is married and has also taken orders (deacon) in the Church and of course can only take care of his own. We have followed you in your prosperous career and rejoiced for you. Auntie[?] sends you her love. She has not forgotten Al Edison, as she used to call you. [Added as postscript]: P.S. Auntie[?] says, "Can you play the Detroit-Schottisch correctly yet?"
