[D8618F], Letter from Theodore Hook Whitney to Thomas Alva Edison, June 29th, 1886

Editor's Notes

Mr. Flagler of the new Ponce de Leon Hotel left here last week and will probably call on you to see you in regard to electric lights for the Hotel. I tried to get the work for lights, bells[?], etc. He said he would see you about it if I was capable of putting the lights in. I know that I can do it . I have no doubts about the bells[?]. Now if you will be so kind as to say a few words in my favor, I shall never forget it. I should like to get the job very much as it will help me ever so much. It will be a big advertisement for me. I could get 2 or 3 men from your company and they would know that it was done proper. There are two other hotesl that want electric lights and if they do, I will get the work. They spoke of the Edco System, but as I never saw it, I could not recommend it. I told them that yours were the best. There is a great deal that I could learn about the lights and if I could get the Ponce de Leon's work and have some of your men here to work for me, I could put the plants in myself for the other two, or while the men are here we could put the plants in. If they put the plants in, I will try and get a few private parties to go into it, too. ##I have written your company for prices. Please do your best for me. Is there any chance of my being your agent here? ##Would that Maxim [Magic?] Lantern 20 cp light be suitable for a dentist to work by at night, run say two hours? Is the "Aurora" battery as good as the Edco for running one of the Electro-Dynamic Co.'s motor for dentists, say five cells? Would it last as long and would there by power enough to run a light suitable to work by? I don't suppose it would run one of your Magic[?] Lantern lights, 20cp. There is about 11 volts. Will Stout, Meadowcraft, too, do as well by me as your company. They charge $15 per day for 16 cp lamps, is not that very dear, with 25% discount.
