Title

[D8732ABQ], Letter from Tacoma Light and Power Co, J H Houghton to William J Jenks, November 2nd, 1887

Editor's Notes

Enclosed with D8732ABP. "We are receiving circulars almost every day from some Electric Light Company relative to some new system and claiming great advantages over the others and in what particularly interests is its matter of long distance lighting -- and we are desirous of knowing if you have made any changes or improvements in your system in the respect. We have always been informed that it is not possible to run your low tension incandescent a greater distance than 1500 feet from the station. if that be so we could not operate that successfully from our present water power station which is a mile or more away from the [-----] of the territory requiring light -- with your municipal light and the American Arc and our gas we are able to supply most of the present demand but it will probably be necessary before long to put in some incandescent light which can e controlled by the consumer -- we had a letter a few days ago from Sp[---]ing who says he is the general agent here for an alternatin long distance system of incandescent lighting in connection with the Thomson-Houston and that he is putting it in at Spokane Falls in opposition to the Edison -- That the Edison people cannot light [----] than 4000 feet from their station and that he has other great advantages in the cast of conductors & number of lamps to the H. P. -- Perhaps you can & will tell me how much of all this is true -- We have had a good success with the Municipal machine you sent us and do not care to go to any other company than yours where it shall be necessary to add domestic lighting to our system unless some other company has manifest advantages -- We wrote you some days ago asking you to send us fifty sockets for the municipal lamps, of a new material which Mr. hosmer sayd you showed him --"
