Title

[D8856ADJ], Letter from Harkness Fire Extinguisher Co to Charles Batchelor, October 5th, 1888

Editor's Notes

"Yours of the 4th. received and contents noted. In reply will say that the riser will be 4 1/2 inchs, the main pipes of the building are from 4 to 2 1/2-inchs and the lines on which the sprinklers are put are from 2 1/2-inch to 3/4 of an inch. This is the fullest schedule required by the "New York Board of Fire Under-writers". ### We laid your matter before The New York Board of Fire Under-writers to day stating how the system was to be constructed with an Automatic Fire Pump, Fire Department connections, Hydrants &c. They say that they cannot accept the Equipment without a tank but that they will accept it without the pump. You can have the pump or not but there must be a tank. There has been several buildings burned within the last I2 months where they depended on the pump and the New York Board and New England Insurance Companies will no longer accept any sprinkler equipment without a tank. ### Our proposal with the tank will be accepted by the New York Board of Fire Underwriters and will give the lowest rates of Insurance. Our Mr. Harkness will call at your place to-morrow."
