[Add name mention: John T. Moriarty] Replying to your letter of the 22nd inst. received today as to any authority to Mr. John T. Moriarty of 19 Pearl St. Boston to organize a N. E. Co. to introduce the Linotype Machines, I beg to say that March 11 the Board of Trustees authorized Samuel M. Bryan Vice Pres to receive applications for a license to use the machines in the N. E. States. It was required that the application be accompanied by an order for 50 machines and $50,000 payable in monthly installments of $12,500 and further that $100 per year in advance should be paid the Mergenthaler Printing Co, as royalty on each machine, 45% of the stock of the local Co. should be transferred to the M. Co. and that the local Co. should supply the demand for machines on the same terms, charging not less than $400 per annum for the use of each machine. Up to this time it was not known to M. Co. that any person except Bryan was attempting to do anything towards organizing a Co. On 16th & 17th inst. J.T.M. was at our factory and said that he had not before learned that the policy of the company had changed and that he had been active the previous two weeks especially in forming a N. E. Co. Bryan says he did not establish business relations with any one except S. F. Moriarty (brother of J.T.M.) and that he wrote S.F.M. March 22 that the local Co. scheme might be abandoned and on March 25 that it had been abandoned. Seems J.T.M. was not advised of the changed conditions of things. The question of forming local Cos. has been postponed until June 1.
