I am going to take the liberty of asking your judgement in a matter which concerns an entire stranger to yourself; but as it is a matter that refers to the security of my property, possibly you would be willing to give me some advice. # I have recently built a house at Elberton, NJ, and as some of family are very much afraid of lightning, I would be glad to get your judgement in the matter. # I carried out the suggestion of an architect, in adopting a rather unusual system of protection. # He suggested running a strip of copper 1/32 of an inch in thickness, and about one inch in breadth up the three upright chimneys from permanent moisture to the top of the chimneys. # The rods rest on the top of the chimneys without any point, and are not insulated. # I have also connected all the metal in the house by strips of copper. # This rod comes in contact with the wood-work in several places, and joins the main soil pipe which is of iron for a ground. # I am at a loss to decide whether this system is quite safe or whether I should have the old kind of lightning rods with glass insulators put on in addition. # I am not seeking this information except for my own personal use. # Would you kindly let me know what you think of this plan and also whether in your judgement, lightning rods in general are any protection. # I would be greatly indebted to you and treat in entire confidence any advise you may give me.
