[LB006868], Letter from Julius L Hornig to F W Geroche, Wright Steam Engine Works, January 28th, 1881

Editor's Notes

YOurs of 25th is received. The request to give us a statement at what speed and at what power your motor was to turn was made to Mr. Bigler to enable us to make a dynamo and light to suit and that we could not complete our work without some base to start from. We proposed to run the dynamo only 600 to 1000 revol per min for greates duration of invervals in attention and inspection of wearing parts of the dynamo. We will have to rate the lamp to suit the power exerted on the dynamo at decided speed and therefore informed mr Bigler that a limit of speed and pressure on the motor must be provided by roper safety escape or governor-valve. If possible to make such controlling arrangements for your motor that he speed vary only slightly and rather operate only at intervals; then we can make a correct light, else at slow speed of motor the carbons would hardly get red hot or shine and at high speed would run up the intensity of the light to destroy the carbon at once or quickly. We adopt from our experiments in speed of dynamo of 600 revol pr. min. at a power of 1/4 horsepower and exptect you will be able to govern your motor accordingly. If that is satisfactory we can furnish the dynamo in about 10 days.
