Editor's Notes
I am in receipt of your letter of 24th Feby##So far as separating the pure magnet[ite] from the guague this can be done electrically with perfect success and in a very simple manner so [that] any ordinary machanic with a little teaching can run the machine.##We have separated a great deal of sand here and have sold the pure magnetite at a profit owing to their system of doing so being defective.##We are however now selling the magnetite to another [person] here in New York who are working it in a furnace using crude [petroleum]. They say they are meeting with success. We have a man looking into the matter and as soon as we are satisfied that the process is commercial we will write you again as to it.##I do not know whether you can get Crude Petroleum in any of the Australian Colonies or if not whether you can afford to import it. You might make enquiries on this subject and advise me.
