Title
[LB016403], Letter from Samuel Insull to Phillips B Shaw, May 22nd, 1883
Editor's Notes
I think it highly probable that I can reduce the amount of the Danville estimate in several ways as since you left here we have closed arrangements that will slightly cheapen our work. I know that can cut $200.00 off the building and still build a very much better building than we had originally intended to put up.##I write this for your information and will not go into details until I see you with reference to closing the contract.##Mr Edison is strongly of the [opinion] that we should undertake to do the work ourselves and not leave any to the local people as judging from our experience with the Shamokin people we are going to have a great deal of trouble owing to delay in their doing their part of the work.##If we had the whole of the Shamokin work our man would now be starting his work in that place whereas under the arrangements at present existing it is quite uncertain when we shall be able to start in with our work there and consequently our arrangements are very much [expecl]. I am unable to order anything for Shamokin because of the long delays we are likely to be subject to consequent on the Company there acting so tardily in closing their contracts for the building &c. I think that unless they act a little more promptly we shall be compelled to remind them that we can by our contract, call on them to reimburse us for any expense we may be put to owing to their delaying our work.##I think you will see the point of this as it is essential to your interests as well as to ours that all the work should be done quickly.##I am getting letters from our Agents as to Maxim plants and they will be put forward to you by tomorrows mail.
