- Editor's Notes
- Yours of the 16th just recd. I ship you by Adams Express today instruments necessary to equip the circuits named in one ckt to work from Kansas City to St Joseph, with phone stations at the terminals only. And condensers for the intermediate stations Leavenworth and Atcheson, the other ckt to work between Atcheson & St Joseph with condensers at the intermediate stations. ## I also send you by todays mail a copy of the "Electrical Worlds" giving a description of the phonoplex with diagrams which will aid your electricians in setting the instruments up. For battery fluid you must use the regular Electropoion, which you can make as follows. ## 5 lbs Bichromate potash ## 15 " [ditto mark for "lbs"] C[??]il Sulphuric acid ## add water sufficient to make five gallons of fluid. The proper thing to mix it in is a 5 gal stone jar or crock, put the Electropoion in the porous [emps?] and add a diluted solution of sulfuric acid in the glass or [suitable?] jar, there should be only two or three tablespoons of sulphuric put in each glass jar, and then fill up to the [shoulder?] with water. You will find it necessary to renew this battery entirely about every second day, operators must be careful to keep their keys closed when receiving, and when not using the line, and thus save the battery. The Condensers at way stations should be connected as follows: [diagram of the connection] and the full capacity of the condenser should be plugged in at each way station. On the following sheet I will give you diagrams of the phone station connections, which if followed faithfully must without doubt give you two splendid working circuits. The condenser around the coil should be plugged just enough to keep the spark out of the points on the transmitter, usually from 64 to 72 sheets gives the best results. [skips p. 4--diagram page?] My understanding of the terms under which these instruments were to be sent, as per our talk at the Hoffman [Manse?] is as follows: We are to furnish instruments necessary to equip one circuit, and to give you diagrams by which your employees are to set them up, and to give you the free or trial use fo the same for thirty days, when if they work satisfactory you are to purchase the instruments and are also ["also" is inserted above the line] to pay a royalty of one hundred dollars per year per circuit, but in case your electricians should not succeed in getting satisfactory results, we are to send an Expert from New York to put the instruments in operation & all Expenses of sending said Expert to be borne by your company. If this understanding is correct please advise me and I will forward you contract in accordance. You must bear in mind the fact that if there are any relatys in on the [CKt?] that are not condensed, you cannot work the phone [CKt?] successfully, therefore you must keep a sharp lookout for testing instruments at the switchboards, and keep them out when you desire to work the phone [ckt]. ## I don't exactly understand how your ckt from St Joseph to Atcheson is to be worked, is it a short lone or do you wish to work it morse from KC to St Jos * Atcheson if this should be [???] the condensers will have to be adapted in setting up the Atcheson [???], and if you will [advise?] me [if?] this is the [case?], I will send you [??? ???]. Hoping you will get the [??? ... ??? (text is badly blotted)] any other result. I am Yours very truly
