Title
[LB025305], Letter from Alfred Ord Tate to William M Allison Jr., October 30th, 1888
Editor's Notes
Your letter under date Sept. 22nd addressed to our Mr. Kennelly came duly to hand and was referred to Mr. Edison. The latter desires me to say in reply that the experiments to which you refer were conducted in Florida when he (Mr. Edison) was ill, and very little was accomplished - so little that it would be useless to describe it. The plan was, to put a long tube, 1ft. diameter, 10 feet under water, one end closed by an iron diaphragm, a shrill stem whistle put down the tube; another tube about 10 feet long closed with a diaphragm, and fine stretched wire run from such diaphragm to a small diaphragm connected to a stethoscope, to collect the vibrations through the water at a distance, Mr. Edison intends to resume his work in this connection some time in the future, and the experiments will be continued.
