- "Mr. Edison asks me to say in reply to your letter of 1st instant that, if the suspended leaden cables are insulated at the points of support, like an ordinary telegraph wire, we know, both from experiment and calculation, that their electrostatic capacity may be increased as much as 40% by being buried underground, the exact amount depending upon the dimensions of the wire and its electrostatic capacity (in water). By obtaining this, the diameters of the conductor, the insulated conductor, and the covered cable, the increase can be calculated, if the average height of suspension above the ground be given or assumed. ### If, on the other hand, the cables are not insulated at the points of support, but find ground more or less through the poles and cross arms, then the difference will be very much less, say only 5%, depending upon the degree of grounding made.
