Title
[LB028643], Letter from Alfred Ord Tate to Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad Co, R W Vincent, March 14th, 1889
Editor's Notes
"In reply to your letter of 8th instant, I beg to say that Mr. Edison is so fully occupied with his experiments he cannot give personal attention to the subject of your communication. I think, however, that I can give you the information you ask for. About two years ago, in New York City, I saw and heard an electrical piano, such as you describe. Vibratory hammers were arranged either above or below the strings of the instrument and connected so as to vibrate against the strings when the keys of the piano were depressed, the result being a tone very much like that of an organ. By moving a switch the battery connection of these arms and their magnets was broken, and the piano could then be used in the ordinary manner. I believe since that time further experiments have been carried on and more perfect results obtained. I am unable to give you the names of the people interested in these experiments, but you could doubtless find all about is by addressing one of the New York electrical journals."
