- Editor's Notes
- Mr. Edison has asked me to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of your esteemed favor under date 5th instant, enclosing a communication from the Rev. Mr. Lambert, of Paris, France, in which he suggests an application of the phonograph in connection with the deaf and dumb.###New uses are being discovered for the phonograph every day, and the field for its application would seem to be unlimited. Mr. Edison has already thought of using the instrument for the purpose which Mr. Lambert advocates so earnestly, but he has not yet had time to make the experiments which would be necessary to enable him to determine the most feasible method of accomplishing the result desired. Many persons in America interested in institutions similar to the one with which Mr. Lambert is connected have approached Mr. Edison on this subject; and they are all deeply impressed with the feasibility of applying the phonograph for the relief of the deaf and dumb. Mr. Edison himself is such interested in this branch or the subject, and may take it up some time in the future. At present, however, other important experimental work, requiring his constant individual attention, prevents him doing so.##I will mail Mr. Lambert an acknowledgement of his letter in the course of a few days, and will then put him in communication with the parties controlling the phonograph in Europe, with whom he may be able to arrange for facilities for the experimentation which he desires. I am, Most reverend Sir, Yours very respectfully, A.O. Tate
