Mr. Edison is indebted to His Grace, the Archbishop of New York, for referring to him your letter without date, in which you suggest an application of the phonograph in connection with the deaf and dumb. Mr. Edison receives a great many letters from all parts of the world, containing suggestions in regard to the phonograph, and he appreciates highly the interest which the public is taking in his invention. He has already thought of using the phonograph for the purpose which you mention, but never has had time to give the subject sufficient thought to enable him to determine as to its practicability. Since his return from Europe, he has started out on a new line of experiment, which demands his attention night and day, and it is impossible for him to undertake any additional work at present. Mr. Edison regrets that he cannot indicate a line of experiment for you to follow in this connection, but suggests that you communicate with Col. George E. Gouraud, Little Menlo, Upper Norwood, Surrey, England, who controls the phonograph in Europe, and who may be able to afford you [unclear] for the experimentation which you desire.
