March 22nd 1890 Prof. Harris J. Ryan, Cosmopolitan Hotel, New York City Dear Sir:- In reply to your letter of 19th instant, asking permission for a party of Cornell students to visit the Laboratory, on the 27th instant. I beg to inform you that I submitted your communication to Mr. Edison, and he regrets very much, that it is impracticable for him to grant your request. Mr. Edison is conducting a great many experiments here, for different companies, and they, having heard of several parties of visitors to whom had been extended the privilege of inspecting the Laboratory, objected very strongly to this practice being continued, and in deference to their wishes. Mr. Edison decided to exclude all visitors. There is no Institution, in whose favor Mr. Edison would be more willing to make an exception, then the Cornell University., and he regrets exceedingly, that he cannot see his way clear to grant the permission asked for on behalf of the students now on their annual tour of inspection.
