April 2nd 1890 Sir Charles Tupper, High Commissioner for Canada, 9 Victoria Chambers, London, S.W. England My Dear Sir Charles:- I have received a letter from Mr. Ritchie, in which he states that you desire to have a copy of my patent for treating fibres, upon which you desire to give some information to Sir Ambrose Shay. In compliance with this request I beg to say, that I can only treat fibres of the AGAVE family, which I do by soaking the leaves for several weeks in a solution of crude petroleum. Then when the leaves are taken out, everything is pulp, excepting the fibre. I intend starting Works down in Mexico for treating leaves of this family, which I can obtain there in abundance. Perhaps, Sir Ambrose Shay could send me samples of the plant he desires to have treated. Very truly yours, Thomas A. Edison
