June 11th, 1891. F.R. Williams, Esq., Special Agent in charge of Manufacture, Dep’t. of the Interior, CENSUS OFFICE, Washington, D.C. Dear Sir:- Your letter of 1st instant, in regard to telegraphing from moving trains, was duly received by Mr. Edison. The system of train telegraphy referred to is controlled by Railway Telegraph and Telephone Company, New York City. Mr. Edison is not familiar with the Company’s operations, and he is therefore unable to give you much information on the subject. The Lehigh Valley R.R. is the only railroad upon which this system of train telegraphy is in operation. Mr. Edison suggests that you communicate with the Railway Tel. & Tel. Co., from which you could doubtless obtain detailed information. He regrets that he is unable to give you the Company’s address in New York. Yours truly, A.O. Tate Private Secretary.
