July 30, 1891. A.P. Baker Esq., 57 Deansgate, MANCHESTER, England. Dear Sir:- Your letter of 12th instant addressed to Messrs. Edison & Co., has been received at the Laboratory. Immediately upon its receipt we referred it to Mr. W.J. Hammer, who had entire charge of Mr. Edison’s Paris exhibit. The following is what Mr. Hammer says in regard to the account referenced in your letter, and inasmuch as he does not approve the bill we cannot consider it:- “My impression of the enclosed [your letter] is that he has no claim in the least. He agreed to furnish certain pictures of the Edison Display for use in Official Album Etc., but dilly-dallied so long, went off to Manchester and elsewhere, leaving the work in the lurch, [illegible, hole in paper] the samples furnished were not as agreed, and I countermanded the order and notified him I had given the work to another concern in Paris. A long while after, Baker’s man name around apologizing &c. and I told him it was all his own neglect and carelessness that he lost the order. Subsequently he sent in a bill, though he said nothing about it at the time and as we did not use the few plates he made and they were not as ordered, and as he entirely neglected the job, I am sure he has no legitimate claim; the one he makes is ridiculous.” Yours truly A.O. Tate Private Secretary. M.
