Sept. 11th, 1893. Peter Clark, Esq., Granite, Mont. Dear Sir:-- Mr. Edison has received your letter of 15th ult. In reply he directs me to inform you that he uses large sapphires, which are not gems, for different purposes in connection with his work. He is at present obtaining sapphires from Ceylon at a cost of $1.60 per ounce. Mr. Edison will be glad if you will send him a sample of sapphire from the mine to which you refer. After the gems are sorted out, if the remaining sapphires are suitable for Mr. Edison's purposes, he will make a purchase provided price is satisfactory. Yours truly, A.O. Tate Private Secretary. M.
